Lesson Five..... Justified by Faith ... Part 2 ... (Click Here For Previous Lessons)

This lesson will continue to explore the doctrine of Justification by Faith

Justification is the act of God declaring a sinner who believes in the finished and completed work of Christ to be righteous. (in right standing with God) It's an act on God's part, not ours. According to the root meaning of the word, {dikaioma} it's a legal term or matter, a judicial decision. God is "pronouncing" righteousness on us, not that we ARE righteous ... He is declaring we are "in right standing" with HIMSELF "in Christ" Who is our legal representative. We are the "righteousness of God in Christ" which is a whole study by itself! And if you have time and resource materials, do a study on just that phrase, "IN CHRIST" sometime, and you will be blessed to see to what extent our place in Christ is, in this world and His Kingdom!

Under the law and the Old Covenant, righteousness was to be obtained by how one conducted himself or according to his behavior in what he did and did not do, and of course, could never obtain that status and the failure to do so had to be atoned for by the continual sacrifices of the blood of bulls and goats.

Under the New Covenant, righteousness comes by believing in the sacrifice that has been provided once and for all by the shed blood of Jesus. Remember the word study from the last lesson. PROPITIATION means the satisfying of God's Holy Law. JESUS' blood was the price paid! It redeemed mankind .. bought us back from sin and death, therefore, because of Jesus "standing in for" .. "taking the place of" .. "representing all" who would believe, we are JUSTIFIED as we enter into the better, New Covenant with GOD, JESUS being our legal covenant representative. Indeed, the BLOOD OF JESUS, our High Priest, is the ONLY way we can approach GOD! When you're studying this week, read through Hebrews, especially chap. 7 through 10. This portion of scripture will cause your mind and spirit to "come alive" to the meaning of the covenants, sacrifices, and the priesthood of Jesus! It will give you new inspiration and courage to draw nearer to God!

No amount of works on our part could ever earn justification, other than the "works" that Jesus spoke of in
John 6:28,29. .. Then they said to Him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered them and said, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him Whom He has sent."
So you see, believing is the ONLY work that must be done to obtain Salvation, and in believing, we understand that we are sinners, and in repentance we turn from our dead works and sin, and turn to God and life to the living work of faith, receiving Salvation and passing from death into life. (in the next lesson we'll examine how faith and works are displayed together, using Abraham as an example)

SO ... WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE BELIEVE?

1. We are REDEEMED .. Apolutrosis
We are released from the guilt of sin, delivered from the presence of sin and the power of sin, and introduced into a new life .. we are bought with a price, that price being Jesus' Blood.

2. Jesus becomes our PROPITIATION ... Hilasterion
Jesus becomes our propitiation, our Mercy Seat and our High Priest. He offers His own blood, and He Himself is the sacrifice which satisfies the law of God with payment in full for the sins of the world .. for all, so that the redemption payment is paid.

3. We are JUSTIFIED. .. God pronounces us "righteous."

4. God IMPUTES righteousness to our account. He RECKONS us or considers us to have no sin to our account because we are no longer under the law, because through the Blood of Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death, God RECONCILES us to Himself.

IN LIGHT OF THIS ... we cannot boast of our own works in regards to Salvation, but as Paul said, "Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith."

WHAT THEN, do we have in our possession NOW, and what are we partakers of, and what are we called??

The Promise The first promise of redemption was told to the serpent after the fall of Adam and Eve from life into spiritual death. (Gen 1:15) "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise Him on the heel." .... The word "bruise" there means literally, to "crush" The woman's seed, of course, was Jesus. And in bruising Jesus, the serpent had no idea that in His death, He would buy back fallen mankind to be reconciled with God. If he had known, he would have done everything he could to stop the crucifixion. ... That promise was carried like a fine thread through the ages by the prophets, men and women of God, by shadows, types, and examples of things that were to come. We, as believers, have NOW laid hold of that PROMISE! ...(Rom 1:2)

We are beloved saints. God cherishes us with the tender, loving heart of a Father. Rom. 1:7

Kindness, forbearance, and patience were given to us from God as HE led us to repentance. Rom 2:4

A New Covenant ... We are in a covenant with God Himself, which He promised, brought to fulfillment, and made a provision for us to enter.

Peace with God even in tribulation, which brings about perseverance, character, and hope. ... Rom 5:1-0

The Free Gift (translated the gift without a cause) .. that we have not had to earn. It came by the grace of the One Man Jesus Christ ... Rom 5:15

Eternal Life ... Grace reigns through righteousness (which has been imputed to us) to Eternal Life through Jesus Christ, our Lord. ... Rom 5:21 ... see John 3:16 also
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is Eternal Life in Christ Jesus, our Lord. ... Rom 6:23

Freedom from death ... We are freed from the law of sin and death ... "knowing this, that our old self was crucified with HIM, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. Even so, consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus." ... Rom 6:6-11

No Longer Condemned ... There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, for the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. ... Rom 8:1

Under Obligation to and Led by the Spirit of God ... For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear and bondage again ...

Adopted "son's of GOD, our ABBA, FATHER! ... but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba Father!" The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are "children of God!" Rom 8:14-16 The term "abba" is used in much the same way that we would use "Daddy" and clearly shows that while we are in awe of God as the King of the Universe, we also may know Him as our Father who is so close to us that He holds us in His bosom, close to His heart!

Help for our weaknesses .. and in the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses ... Rom 8:26

All Things Work Together for Good for us ... for those of us who love God, and are called according to His purpose .. Rom 8:28

God is for us! ... if God is for us, who can be against us? Rom 8:31

Conquerors! ... in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. ... Rom 8:37

We are His People and Sons of the Living God ... As He says in Hosea, "I WILL CALL THOSE WHO WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, 'MY PEOPLE,' AND HER WHO WAS NOT BELOVED, 'BELOVED.'" ... THERE SHALL THEY BE CALLED THE SONS OF THE LIVING GOD." (speaking of Gentiles) Rom 9:25-26

A Measure of Faith ... as God has allotted to each a measure of faith ... Rom 12:3

Gifts ... we have each given to us gifts that differ according to the grace given to us ... Rom 12:6

The list could go on and on!! .. and that's an idea .. you could continue the list. If you do, and would like to share it with me, be sure to e-mail it to me so I can add yours to my list.

{just a thought} I'm hoping to do a study some day on "IN CHRIST" in conjunction with the "COVENANTS"
These themes are so exciting when we dig into them to glean those "treasures" ... those "pearls of great price"

******************************************************************************

We should have enough for now to think about and study for the next two weeks when I'll be doing "Justification by Faith Part 3" and we'll begin to touch on the issue of faith and works. I don't know about you, but studying for these lessons has given me so much encouragement and I've seen new things in the Word each time! I do hope that all who are visiting this page and are studying with me are learning spiritual truths as we go on into the study of our Salvation, and that what we're learning will help us to share the GOSPEL with others, and that we'll keep these things hidden in our hearts so we can stand strong, and face with courage those trials and challenges that may come our way!
